PRESIDENT & CEO REPORT
January 10, 2008
Leadership Gifts Campaign
To date, 87% of Area Agency staff have pledged and/or donated $16,742 to the annual Leadership Gifts Campaign, which is nearly $4,700 more than staff donated last year!
All of the Area Agency’s “inner family” are asked to participate in the campaign, with a goal of 100% participation by board and advisory council members. Packets were distributed at the December board and advisory council meetings. ELDERfriends board members, who conduct the campaign each year in support of the DOVES program, will follow up with those who have not returned their green Letter of Intent form indicating their pledge or donation. If you did not receive a packet, please let Kaye Baker know and she will get one to you.
NCPEA Elder Abuse Community Collaborations Project
Thirty-seven proposals were received in response to a Request for Proposal released in November for the 3-year NCPEA project being conducted by the Area Agency on Aging for local elder abuse prevention network development. The Area Agency initially reviewed the proposals and submitted its recommendations to a national review committee for final selection of 10 organizations to receive network development training by the Area Agency.
ADRC Training
The second of three training sessions related to the new Maricopa Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) is being conducted on January 10. The Lewin Group, a consulting company based in Falls Church, Virginia, will conduct the all-day training session on options counseling. The training is being attended by 20 Area Agency staff, along with 50 other staff from Arizona Bridge to Independent Living, DES Division of Developmental Disabilities, and AHCCCS.
ElderVention
ElderVention Program Director Bianca McDermott will be conducting a 2-day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training at the Magellan Tempe Learning Center. The training is designed to teach suicide intervention skills to all people, regardless of background or training. The date for the training has not yet been set.
Sanja Tetaric, formerly the Supervisor of the Family Caregiver Support Program, has been named to be the first therapist in ElderVention’s new clinical treatment program. To date, three clients have been accepted into the program.
Chronic Disease Self-Management Program
As part of the Area Agency’s health promotion initiative, three Agency staff attended a 5-day training at Stanford University on chronic disease self-management. They will conduct workshops for people living with chronic conditions such as heart or lung disease, asthma, arthritis, HIV, diabetes or Crohn’s Disease. Taking a “train-the-trainer” approach, workshop participants can become group leaders themselves.
Program Funding
• All three proposals submitted by HIV Care Directions for the HUD Continuum of Care Competitive Homeless Assistance Awards have been funded for FY2010. A total of $247,911 will support 3 case managers and portions of the Housing Coordinator, Unit Clerk and Vice President of Client Services.
• Two donations of $5,000 each were received from Ken Maggard, one in support of HIV Care Directions and one in support of the DOVES program.
• American Reliable Insurance Company has made a donation of $2,500 to the DOVES program.
• SMACNA (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractor’s National Association) has made a $976 donation from their poker run in support of the Scottsdale Home-Delivered Meals program.
• Only 5 tickets remain to be sold for the Coyotes Fundraiser. If the total of 50 tickets are sold, $540 will be raised for the DOVES program. Additional funds will come in from the 50/50 Raffle at the March 11th hockey game.
Holiday Activities
The Columbine Garden Club donated small, decorated Christmas trees for our home-delivered meals clients. Meal delivery volunteers distributed them to 37 very appreciative recipients.
Area Agency staff became “Christmas angels” for 38 children and 2 SAIL clients this holiday season. Program staff from Care Directions, Mosaic Elder Refugee Program, and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren wrote the age, gender and ideas for gifts for children of families in their programs on paper angels displayed in the Agency reception area. Agency staff selected an angel and provided gifts for that child.
